An examination of current trends in Black Literature (i.e. Commercial Fiction) and the historical significance of these trends. Dialogue on topics such as "What novelists will be remembered 100 years from now," and "Is there not enough attention paid to craft by emerging writers." Panel: "Black Writers Respond to the Film, SLAM" (Screening is at 3:15 p.m.) Panelists: Ruth Forman, Abiodun Oyewole (Last Poets), Tony Medina, DJ Renegade, and Glenis Redmond Sherer. Moderated by Esther Iverem Black poets and spoken word performers will discuss and offer observations on this upcoming film which takes a look at the incredible redeeming power of the Spoken Word. Friday at 6:45 p.m. "360° A Revolution of Black Poets" Part 1 at BMA Featuring: Haki R. Madhubuti, Sonia Sanchez, DJ Renegade, Thomas Sayers Ellis, Afaa Michael Weaver, Askia Toure, Carolyn Joyner, June Jordan (cancelled), Kwame Alexander, E. Ethelbert Miller, Ruth Forman, Roger Bonair-Agard, Tracie Morris, Wanda Coleman (cancelled), Reggie Timpson, Eugene Redmond, Quraysh Ali Lansana and Mari Evans. Friday at 12 midnight University of MD, College Park Nyumburu Cultural Center Panel: "Publishing Poetry" Panelists: Kysha Brown (Runagate Press), Jessica Care Moore (Moore Black Press), Afaa Micahel Weaver (Obsidian: Black Literature In Review), and Troy Johnson (African American Literature Book Club) Moderator: Kwame Alexander (BlackWords, Inc.) Opening Remarks by Haki R. Madhubuti (Third World Press)
A discussion by publishers on how writers can get their poetry books published; and how they can get their work published in literary periodicals. A brief look at the self-publishing and printing process will also take place. Saturday at 12 noon University of MD, College Park Nyumburu Cultural Center Panel: "Black Writers Respond/The Black Arts Movement Dialogue" Panelists: Askia Toure, Mari Evans, Eugene Redmond, E. Ethelbert Miller. Moderated by Marcia Davis (Emerge Magazine) Personal Observations by member of the Black Arts Movement, on how the movement began, and some of the theory, ideology and practice that came out of the movement. Special attention will be paid to the continuation of this ideology in the current "Hip Hop Generation." Question and Answer with the audience will conclude the discussion. Saturday, from 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. A critical look at the future of Black Poetry, as a spoken and written word. An examination of current modes of Black Poetry (Slamming, Pojazz, etc.) Dialogue on topics such as "What new areas of poetic expression will be nurtured in the new millenium," and "Will spoken word cds and other forms of multi-media, replace books of verse."
