billed as his "autobiographical fourth novel," seems
positioned to be his breakout book--which is a funny
thing for a writer who has already received so many
major literary awards, including a MacArthur "Genius"
grant and being short-listed for the Pulitzer."

The Book of Night Women
begins in 1800 Jamaica, on the Montpelier plantation. A
group of female slaves, who call themselves, Night
Women, are planning to free all of the slaves and kill
every white person on the island.
...a literary milestone, an unforgettable achievement.
It is not often that I surrender to a story completely,

DaVohn, as an author, hammers away at the cultural
nationalist themes of renewal and redemption of a
community by its people, namely its men. It's almost a
fictional vision akin to a novel which would have been
written by a young Huey Newton or Marcus Garvey. When
Bishop rides to the rescue to his community, he knows
that nothing will be easy and that the stakes will be
high. Like the Black Panthers or the Nation of Islam, he
realizes that the frustration and hopelessness holding
the people back is very potent and caused by their
confusion by their daily doses of lies and dogma from
their local ministers and politicians. He knows these
are not opponents to be taken lightly. |

Passing Strange: A Gilded Age Tale of Love and Deception
across the Color Line
written by Martha A. Sandweiss is a book about an
episode in America's history that is hardly explored
anymore, passing. Usually passing is a term used when a
black person, who has a light color skin complexion is
mistakenly identified as a white person. In Passing
Strange there is a twist, I call it reverse passing.
Passing Strange is a true story of how a well respected
white man, with some social standing, lead a double life
as a black man in order to love and marry a black woman
in the late 1800s. The story itself is highly
intriguing. Passing Strange one significant failure is
that Sandweiss in an effort to factually verify the
story forgot to tell the story. |

Africans from their native language played a critical in
not only their exploitation but in their continued
capitulation to being regulated to second-class status
today. The author goes on to say that black folks today
suffer from an unrequited quest for wholeness, a
thirst for knowledge of self which can never be satiated
so long as they speak and write solely in the languages
of their former slave masters and colonizers. For
English, Spanish, Dutch, Spanish and Portuguese are rife
with subtle color-coded symbols and messages which will
only continue to reinforce racist notions of white
supremacy for generations to come. |

Listen, if it's okay in the world of pop music for DJs
to remix snippets of classic songs in order to rap over

do the same thing with an old movie, especially if its

case of Rebirth of a Nation, a sophisticated overhaul of
D.W. Griffith's Birth of a Nation. That controversial

Next Day Air is a throwback which brings to mind the
