FYAH demands a little more than most of us are used to giving. It is not about self-gratification. It is not about getting your poem published. It is not about your name & your words traveling through cyber-space to all parts of the world. It IS about taking what our ancestors ached for, suffered for and died to builda powerful Black literary foundation. It IS about that foundation that was passed on to our elders who dodged bullets just about every time they stood to deliver revelations in verse. It IS about us taking the lessons learned, and the gifts passed on, to fuel the fire that we have for the Black Word. It IS about what we will pass on to our descendants. WE must carry our literary ancestors and elders along with us as we go forward. We must decide who we are in reference to those ancestors and elderswe must define ourselves. We must define ourselves not only in poetry, but also in concrete terms. We must define ourselves not only with emotion, but also with rational thought.
FYAH is not an academic literary journal. We simply wish to show that we are thinkers who create as well as creators who think. And we speak in the language of the people. We decode the coded knowledge so that all may share in its power.
A book review must do more than summarize a book. It must dig in, analyze, explore. Tell the reader what the author attempted to do, what messages they intended to give. Were they successful? What about writing style? How did the book make you feel? What was the best thing about the book? Should we read it and why? Be nurturing, however, never shy away from truthful criticism. A thoughtful and insightful critique can be a powerful tool in helping to shape and understand the aesthetic of the times, exploring the social and political influences upon the word. REVIEW@fyah.com
